What is Pega?

August 11, 2021

There are so many things in life that are automated, you might not even realize it. Using a coffee machine to make a morning cup of coffee, adjusting your thermostat to set the room at a comfortable temperature, and setting up an auto-pay system to pay all your bills are just a few examples. These things simply require you to press a button, or set a schedule, and the work is done automatically so you no longer have to think about it. With such convenience at your fingertips, wouldn’t you want the same for your everyday business processes? Businesses today solve much more complex, larger-scale problems than ever before. There is a growing demand for platforms that help automate complicated business workflows to enable maximum efficiency. That’s how tools like Pega are rapidly increasing in popularity as the need for automated business processes have grown.

Pega is a leading business process management (BPM) platform used in many different industries such as healthcare, finance, insurance, and government. Pega aims to evolve business strategy applications and increase productivity without disrupting operations already in place. In this post we hope to answer some of your questions like “what is Pega?”, “what is possible with it?”, and “what prerequisites are needed to get started with implementing Pega?”

Scope of Pega Technology

Pega is known as a low code application, meaning it allows users to automate processes without knowing how to code. You will still need to learn how to use the software but learning the ins and outs of the platform certainly takes less time than learning a programming language! Of course, this doesn’t mean that the tool is any less powerful. In fact, Pega includes a rules engine called Pega Rules Process Commander (PRPC) for building and deploying applications and focuses on automating work while being built for changes, either manual or software updates. Your code won’t break if an update is made, limiting the time spent scrambling to figure out where you need to fix your scripts for your process to resume.

Pega features a robust method of application creation that enables collaboration within businesses to quickly develop solutions to meet the demands of the business. Within Pega, you can create CRM solutions for sales, a job application process for recruiters, and case management to optimize business processes. Once an application is developed, it can be deployed everywhere, granting a seamless omnichannel experience.

Additional tools are available to replicate procedures or policies onto new applications to save you time. Take advantage of Pega’s many capabilities such as:

·        Built-in framework for an intuitive user interface.

·        Easy to use visual tools to quickly develop applications.

·        Re-useable elements that allow you to build multiple applications for similar procedures.

·        Create mobile software applications to keep customers connected wherever they go.

·        Set up rules and workflows to deploy as web services.

·        Integrate data from REST services.

·        Use predefined layouts or templates to reduce development time for cohesive user experience.

Pega Prerequisites: Before You Get Started

With Pega, process is king so setting goals, getting the right people involved, obtaining necessary data, and identifying reusable elements will be essential first steps. Getting a team together will allow you to distribute the workload both for set up, and when cases come up in the application once running. Get multiple people with different skill sets to collaborate when creating an app, not just the programmers. Programmers will need to be taught the correct steps in a process to properly create the right workflow, so getting the stakeholders involved is an absolute must.

Other things to determine before getting started is how you will handle the data integration for your application. Once you define the structure of your data in the new application, figure out if you will be importing data from a third-party external system into a database, leveraging SOAP or REST services, or manually adding all or some data.

Identify areas where you can reuse designed templates or application workflows. Pega provides many opportunities to copy and modify existing sections. To get the most out of the Pega tools, some thought and planning in the beginning will save you the most amount of development time.

Having knowledge of JavaScript coding may help you, but it certainly isn’t required. Because Pega is a low code application, the interface simply involves clicking and dragging and the code is written for you behind the scenes while you set up your business processes. This allows you to focus more on perfecting the steps and design of the process instead of writing lines of code.
